I can say only this .Guru is all perfect if he is a capable one and we can realise his capability only when we have followed him with faith and devotion in him and confidence in ourselves.So have no doubt in the guru that u r following but ask ur self about ur confidence in him with ur experience which is obvious if u have that inclination and utmost good faith in him as well as the extent of ur surrender to him. I have also mentioned earlier that if one is having that real craving to attain perfection and restlessness towards that objective then a capable master knocks ur door searching for u as a perfect guru also craves for a devoted follower and it is equally difficult eitherway in this endless search.Only a capable guru has that capacity and yes he can remove all defects or help ourselves to get rid off all such deficiencies in us as we progress on right lines, and it will be automatically revealled to the devoted follower.
Regarding ur second point it is advisible to get initiation from a preceptor /representative of the capable guru but there is nothing wrong to start meditation on our own if we are inclined towards it and that is the starting point to get a capable guru who will initiate us on right path automatically.deserve before u desire and that holds good for everything.

Jogarao garu you are just 100% correct; You touched this subject many times but unfortunately at same place with same frequency.
Motivation and intiation are entirely different; Anyone needs motivation to do certain job or task; and the initiation varies from person to person;
