The 117-year-old Vadtal Swaminarayan temple is in news yet again for the wrong reasons. The temple that made news four months ago when five Swaminarayan sadhus were given death penalty for killing their own guru Swami Gadadharnandji, has stunned the Swaminarayan sect and the state after a sting operation by a vernacular daily exposed sexual exploits of two Swaminarayan sadhus in its Dabhoi temple on Friday.
After two swamis of Dabhoi were caught on video with a prostitute, the Swaminarayan temple in Dahboi taluka of Baroda district remained closed on Friday and temple authorities refused to comment on the incident. Even as the Vadtal Swaminarayan Sampradaya temple board chairman Nautam Swami maintained that the sting operation was a “conspiracy” by the rival faction headed by Ajendraprasad and his shishyas, the fact is, the sting operation has brought to fore the nefarious side of the otherwise world-famous temple whose saffron-clad sadhus are involved in murky power struggle since 1978, claiming three lives since then.
