Multilevelview is an inferior solution to this problem. Instead, include append "index.php " to DurectoryIndex field in httpd.conf file, and then restart your apache sever.
Create a small xyz.php file and run the apache benchmak tool "ab" against this file under above two configurations to find their throughput difference.
