| Blood thrown into drain
Guntur, Nov. 9: Hundreds of litres of blood was poured into drains due to lack of storage capacity at the blood bank in the Guntur General Hospital. The incident of po-uring blood into the drain came to light when leaks in the drain pipes were noticed by patients who brought the issue to the notice of hospital superintendent Bhagavanna-rayana, who ordered a probe into the matter.
According to sources, GGH which is acclaimed to the biggest hospital in the coastal Andhra has only four refrigerators with a maximum capacity to store 350 bags of blood units. There was a demand for two more fridges.
The inferior refrigeration system could not store blood for more than one month. If the blood bank is equipped with the centrifuge divisor which separates the blood cells into three parts it can store the blood for two years.
It has been alleged that the pouring of blood into drains is a common phenomenon in GGH, but the matter has surfaced thanks to the leaks in pipes. Meanwhile, the hospital superintendent issued a circular to all blocks instructing the doctors to transfuse the blood to all the needy without replacement. In fact, the GGH has set a target of collecting 4,000 blood units per annum, and till now it has achieved 70 per cent of the target.
Hospital superintendent Bhagavannarayana said the poured blood was only the excess stock being stored for more than 30 days. Blood bank medical officer Anasuya said that the test tubes used to test the blood were cleaned which resulted in the chaos.
