| ABOUT THE MELODY QUEEN M.S.SUBBULAKSHMI

"I accept (the award)in all humility."This was M.S. subbulakshmi's first reaction on hearing that the bhrath ratna,the nation's higest civilian award , had been conferred on her in 1997.Subbulakshmi's response was typical of her.She is an epitome of humility, simplicity,elegance and generosity, and is the most honoured and acclaimed carnatic vocalist.She is so devoted to her art and its divinity, that her achievements and honours matter little to her.
M.s, as she is affectionately called ,was born in the temple town of Madurai in Tamil nadu on september 16, 1916, into a family dedicated to music and art. Subbulakshmi's mother was a distinguished veena player. she gave her daughter name that means ' the auspicious goddess of wealth'.M.S was a child prodigy. she gave her first recital when she was only ten years old, and by the time she was 17, she had begun to give major performances.
In 1947,M.S played the lead role in the film "Meera" made in hindi and tamil.Millons all over the country responsed to her matchless golden voice.
Sarojini naidu described her as a contemporary Meera ans announced ,"From today, i surrender to subbulakshmi , the enchanting singer with an enchanting, voice , my tittle {"the nightngle of india}"
Honours were quick to follow . The padma bhushan in 1954, th madras music Academy's coveted tittle of Sangeetha kalanidhi in 1969, the magasaysay Award in 1974 and the padma vibhusan in 1975.she sang at the genral Assembly of the united nations and before the Queen of england at the royal Albert hall in london. It was the late T. sadasivam , her husband, guru and guide who after their marriage in 1940, largely helped M.S.reach such heights of excellence.
A leading figure in carnatic music M.S. also excels in hundustani light devotional songs. Mahatma Gandhi, once wanted her to sing a particular bhajan, Hari , tum haro"
M.S not knowing the bhajan, suggested that someone else sing it.On hearing this ,Gandhi said "I would rather hear the words of the bhajan spoken by subbulakshmi than sung by any one else.". jawaharlaal nehru was no less enchanted by her sublime voice.He said,"Who am I before this melody Queen ? A mere prime minister.And what right have I , or any one else, to speak when she is there to sing."In these famous tributes lie the secret of the M.S magic'.To her, music is form of bhakti -- a spritual expression and an offering to the divinity.The royalities from her records and the fees from her concerts have invariably been given away to charities or deserving causes.M.s personifies sublimity.Needless to add, besides humans, the gods too listen in rapt attention when this living legend sings."Everyone", she belives,"should study music as they study history or geography or arithmetic.For music is a laudable medium of national integration.".
