Posted by: ★Vinåyåkåm★ chitt♥♥r At: 23, May 2005 12:55:13 PM IST Hands folded and tears in the eye, Devdas says: "He is God. He is the saviour of my child."
Devdas, a poor agriculturist from Sultanpur of Maharashtra, and his wife, Surekha, almost gave up hope on Akshay, their three-year-old son born with congenital heart ailment. The child was suffering, but caught in penury, all they could do was silently cry and pray.
They wrote a letter to the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, about their son's plight following some locals' prodding. Admittedly, they didn't expect a response.
"But to our amazement, our prayers were heard and Rashtrapati saheb did respond," Devdas says. The couple received a communication from city-based Care Hospital asking them to rush their son to Hyderabad. And all care was promised free of cost.
A team of surgeons led by Gopichand Mannam performed a surgery and Akshay is fast recovering. The boy had a ventricular septal defect with right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) obstruction and RVOT was reconstructed with pericardial patch. "He is doing fine and will be sent home soon," a doctor says.
"But for the gesture of the President, I do not know how long my son would have survived. He gave Akshay a new lease of life. Doctors in Maharashtra had said the surgery costs a fortune, but I had no money even for basic medicines," says Devdas. Outside the ICU, Devdas and Surekha wait with fellow villagers who accompanied the poverty-stricken couple to the city. "My son is getting well," Surekha says with a smile. The hospital authorities say they had received a communication from the President. "The hospital is not charging anything. Everything, including surgery and disposables, is being made available free," says Arun Tiwari, director, Care Foundation.
