Posted by: DoBoy At: 11, Jul 2005 7:10:36 PM IST It is easy said than done, more than half of them are children either living as orphans or being neglected. Most of them are also found in bus stations, trains etc. The modus operandi is one of them sweeps the dirt from one end to other, while the other sweeps from that end to the other end. They seek alms. Though the government would sincerely wish to rehabilitate them at a particular place, they would not agree,as they have no timings to seek alms, they are their own boss, they know the weakness of general public and good readers of people's pulse.
Posted by: DoBoy At: 11, Jul 2005 11:02:20 AM IST I am really surprised to see the amount a beggar earn in a month. I wonder if it is really true. Also Grandpa's comment is very sarcastic.
I think there are many NGOs operating in the city and many many so and so schemes run by the govt. Why not show them a way to fish while driving them away from the city?
But it is really horrible to see the beggars in the circles and asking for money. Sometimes it is heart rending and sometimes it is really irritating.
Posted by: Ms. Prasanthi Uppalapati At: 11, Jul 2005 10:24:19 AM IST How to eradicate a habituated profession??That too no investment is needed? Where will they go if they are driven? We r already begging World Bank for loans and NRIs for investments and in some cases help also.
Ha! Idea! Instead of driving them out of Hitech city, why not a begging tax imposed on them by way of yearly renewable license so that the state exchequer can get some revenue?
Posted by: Mr. VIRABHADRA SASTRI KALANADHABHATTA At: 11, Jul 2005 10:07:41 AM IST The total annual earnings of beggars in Hyderabad is Rs 15 crore according to a survey conducted by Hyderabad Council of Human Welfare (HCHW) in collaboration with District Administration. Begging seems to be a prosperous 'business' in the twin cities with an ordinary beggar earning at least Rs 1,000 per month. According to a survey conducted by the Hyderabad District Collectorate, the city had 11,000 beggars, while half of them earn upto Rs 2,400 per month. This is more than a normal salesman in a shop or small restaurants. Now, the District administration boasts of eradicating the menace after six months. Comment.
