| Some remove for selling the cover to hardware shop for money or other agencies for different reasons, but the imporant thing that remains is people's lives.Who cares? None
Posted by: DoBoy At: 23, Jul 2005 1:02:31 PM IST Those manholes weren't kept opened by any person related to any department! It's the tragedy, those were kept opened by the locals of that area. They opened them during the earlier rain, but failed to clsoe them. But shouted and demonstrated when somebody dead!
Posted by: Mr. Vachaspathi V At: 21, Jul 2005 10:41:40 AM IST An uncovered man hole can give entry / access to anybody irrespective of the staus / age / or any other parameter that conreols our soceity.
Man Holes are for the purpose of maintenance constructed for:
1. Utilities(Electricity, telephone lines, gas lines, fresh water lines, irrigation water lines, traffic signals, sewer lines )
2. Underground services(Storm water drainage)
Uncovered Manholes (floor openeings)are known for comedy films and cartoon films.
Manholes either it could be on the middle of the road or along the road. The manholes that over middle of the road needs higher protection and should be capable to sustain dynamic load which caused by the vehicular traffic.
Residential areas will have lesser traffic and load bering than the High ways / motor ways where a manhole was located , constructed. Manhole covers are often missing and need to be reported immediately to the concern authorities for preventing unauthorized access or accidental falls. The manhole covers may broke due to heavy load traffic. Basically the covers are made of cast iron and designed for a particular load. In city like Hyderabad 20 ton above trailers / trucks are increased which may give raise max breakage of covers. Some covers may miss due to theft / sabotage. Some may break even due to poor quality of casting.
Hence, residents should aware of the potential hazards related floor openings (Uncovered man holes) and should inform to concern authorities.
Some preventive measures:
1. Utilities owners should obtain a permit from PW and traffic department if any excavation is to be carried.
2. Floor openings should be adequately barricaded / cordened off / warned.
3. Provide some flash light to warn during the hours of darkness.
There are many but a good system will definetly prevent accidents.

He cannot not know what is beneath the water. This can happen again, as the city is dug, by different agencies at different times all through the year. There should be some indication, atleast. Y the issue has just not been addressed is bothering, atleast here, there should be no politics, it could be anyone tommorrow.
