Good Morning. Can anyone explain the meaning? "People learn, early in their lives, what is their reason for being," said the old man, with a certain bitterness. "Maybe that's why they give up on it so early, too. But that's the way it is."

I am reading 'The Alchemist' sent to me by Sowmya. It is too good. Every word and every sentence is amazing. I really liked it. Ofcourse I am still in the initial pages. I came across the following sentence. Can anyone explain the meaning? "People learn, early in their lives, what is their reason for being," said the old man, with a certain bitterness. "Maybe that's why they give up on it so early, too. But that's the way it is."

Yes. Any god knows our past and future. I believe in god completely.

Prasanthi, If he is really a God, both interpretations are correct. 'Known God' must be 'ishTa deivaM' who obviously can understand not only your needs/requirements but those of others too. Three qualities, viz. Omnipotence, Omnipresence & Omniscience put together constitute any God worth that name. Such a God knows your past as well as your future too.

I think A known God is the one you believe the most or know most, most people believe in a specific God (Shiridi Sai Baba/Venkateswara/Jesus/Allah...) so when ever there is a problem they automatically remember the Known God...regarding the second part of the question "a god who knows your future?" There is no way for us to find out which God knows our future....so we can eliminate that interpretation....Chicken Crossing the road, sneha gari link chadivanu kani na matti burra ki ardham kaledu...

My doubt is 'to a known god'. what known implies here? a known god - a god whom you know. or a god who knows your future? Anyway thank you for your explanation. Also what about Chicken crossing the road?

I don't know whether it's the right explanation but this is what I understood from that...I think its' from bible.. The future is unknown, you don't know what happens in the next second,hr,day,year....it may be good or bad, there may be some problems which you can sort yourself and some problems which no one on earth can solve, then obviously you will turn to your trusted God to solve the problem...it says to entrust your future to God... similar to the one in Gita where krishna asks to surrender everything completely into him... I don't know if it made any sense, but this is my vague understanding
