General Forum: Current 'Affairs' | Are Indian Farmers sitting on a potential goldmine? | |
| If you are happened to travel between Chennai & Vijayawada by any superfast train findout some intresting things.
1. In which place the train picks max speed?
2. Soil is different than from others?
3. The green land become into desert?
I am refering to particular area and it's between Baptla and Chirala. Out of all above we have Agri Iniversity in Baptla. Once the area between Baptla & Chirala was posh with green belt now it turned to a desert. What can't grow in this region, Stuartpuram, Epurupalem, Jandrapeta & Vetapalem. Now only abonmdoned houses.
Ethanol not a cost effective material declared by USA as they consume more energy than they produce.

Posted by: DoBoy At: 21, Jul 2005 11:29:44 AM IST Hi, P&P, gd morning, i will come back, in case i have any other info.
Posted by: DoBoy At: 21, Jul 2005 11:13:34 AM IST "what did u want to do with the seeds" .lol ,of course to plant them . Since the monsoons have failed consicutively for the past 5-6 yrs almost all the wells are dry ,and I thought it would be a good oppurtunity for myself as well as fellow farmers to try them out . There is still a lot of info needed and ,I am actually in the process of collecting info with regard to the seeds and also looking at the hybrid varieties ,if there are any . If you can help me in this regard ,I would be very happty as ,I guess a lot of farmers would benefit and may be our wastelands wount be left fallow .
Posted by: Mr. Pit and the Pendulum At: 20, Jul 2005 9:25:01 PM IST What u said is right. Jatropha, does not need much care and be produced for 30 to 40 years. Yield being 2-5 tonnes being hectare. 30% yeild. What did u want to do with the seeds?
Posted by: DoBoy At: 20, Jul 2005 6:54:50 PM IST I guess the seeds you are talking about are jathropa seeds .
At present the oil from the seeds are costlier to extract than the readily avaliable high speed diesel . Daimler chrysler has already announced an initiative in this regard and has promised to procure atleast 40-50000 litres of bio diesel for the Indian operations .
The govt of India has not yet thought anything on this nor have any initiatives been taken in this regard .
The best point with this is ,the plants grow well in dry and arid type of climates which are suitable to the many parts of India .
The seeds are again costly ,its like Rs5 per seed which is sold privately and I actually tired getting the seeds from the govt cooperatives ,but ,they are costlier and the prospective farmer has to pay for the seeds in advance and wait for 3 weeks minimum .
Posted by: Mr. Pit and the Pendulum At: 20, Jul 2005 5:59:42 PM IST A professor from Bangalore, Ind. Inst. of Science was to a nearby village on a field visit. Some villagers narrated their woes of drought and one of them said the village had nothing but some useless seeds. On quering , the villagers said that they used its oil to burn lamps in their houses. After a while , the professor thought if oil from waste seed can burn lamps, why can't it run a diesel engine?
After 6 months the professor came back and tried the oild from the seed on four diesel generators used in villages to lifting water from wells. Their emission was not harmful smoke and worked perfectly. Today they are not connected to the power grid, but manage with their own power. This might transform indian villages dramatically in few years from now. The other experiment that is being carried is Ethanol a by product of sugarcane. It is now possible to generate electricity from non=edible vegetable oils.
PCRA estimates India consumed 9 million tonnes of petrol and 42 million of diesel for 2004. If 20 percent of the diesel is replaced with seed oil and 10%with petrol with ethanol, the saving of import bill is well worth close USD$ 4 Billion at oil price of $50 a barrel.
