The Parliament on 29th August, 2005 passed The Hindu Succession (Amendment) Bill that gives women of the community equal rights in the inheritance of property. Replying to a brief discussion on the Bill, Law and Justice Minister Mr. H.R.Bharadwaj said the move was a small measure to give women their due place in the society and family, and this measure would also remove gender bias by giving equal rights to daughters as sons has, is little bit hazy! It’s true that the bill aims at ending the deep-rooted gender disparity, but the real obstacle lies at the presence of 'dowry'. Since the Patriarchy is predominant in India that includes patrilocality and patrilineality, the son is preferred as he perpetuated the lineage. The girl child is unwanted to it, not because she perpetuates 'others' lineage, but due to the presence of dowry, dowry related violence and other risks in the system. Hence to avoid future risks, the girl child is eliminated by sex-selective abortions before they born and by female-infanticide after their birth. And the far the education of girl child and for the marriage, both need some investment and attention. The patriarchy simply tries to avoid these attention and investment at both the occasions. Because it feels the attention and investment at both the occasions like, girl child’s marriage and her education, means pouring the water to the neighbor’s plant. Hence at the expense of girl’s education, gender equality, the patriarchy simply washes-off its hand by sending-off the girl child by giving ‘dowry’. Here in this cycle of discrimination, what will be left with the patriarchy to give equal inheritance or equal property to their women? Nothing! As long as Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 is strictly implemented, this equal inheritance will not get materialized. The family that gives dowry just doesn’t give equal inheritance to their daughters. Hence the eradication of dowry is a must to promote ‘Gender Equality’, by means of Equal Property Inheritance and Empowerment of Women as a side effect.

Legal system as well as the media is heavily biased towards women. Men are judged against in nanoseconds the moment there is a noise made by a woman. Well said by MR that majority of who are subjected to these crimes do not (have the means to) approach a court of law and majority of those who do it do to harass men. I would like to point out the media here (which has a vested interest in sensationalizing) for reporting the cases before even making an effort to verify basics. I had an opportunity to talk to a famous lawyer in Hyderabad when I visited India this April. His experience is that the courts are (very slowly but) changing their atitude (atleast in cases) where both spouses are educated and well to do. But when it comes to lower income groups if a woman approaches the court the man is almost always in soup. His fate is sealed the moment the case is taken up by one of those women's activist groups or some one from the woman's side approaches the court. Nobody gives a thought to the possibility that there is a second side to the coin. Unfortunate but true. patrikala sangati alA unchitE... nyAya vyavasta..strI 'pakshapAti'. strIlu chEtagAni tanam vallE idantA! tallulu kUtuLLani E ammakUchilugA penchitE...ilagE unTundi. saraLIkRutamlO...prapanchIkaraNamlO...strIlu I jaDHatvam vadalakapOtE...avi strIlaki 'vADukundi'. antE gAnI..dAni valla vILLu lAbhapaDaru. strIlakOsam unna chaTTAlu strIlakE ardham kAni paristiti undi. kAraNam telusukOvAlani vILLE anukOru.

The pity is that the the majority amongst the women who are really suffering is facing the situation silently and the many of the women who go to courts are doing to just to harass their Husbands and in-laws.

Domestic violence bill: Will this bill, which was passed by LS, bring any respite for women who are being exploited by all means? ------------------------------------------ No bill or legitimacy can’t help normal Indian families as long as they r in the clutches of orthodox community, caste, emotions and sentiments. For educated and smart women don’t need this entire she already in front of men.

Even the highcourt of AndhraPradesh has observed recently that many Women are misusing the bias in the IPC towards them. As I repeat again and again, the moment mutual affection defines the relationship between a man and a woman .. we dont need any law like the aforesaid

This is the letter I just sent to The Hindu.: ------------------- Ours is the system in which women were mobilised by women in favour of ‘Sati’, saying it was part of glorious Hindu tradition, and women were provoked by women to be converted into Hindu communal objects. Ours is the system in which 95 per cent of girls’ ages 6-14 in Kolkata, around 67 per cent in the Hyderabad area, 73 per cent in New Delhi area are malnourished and anaemic. The same is the case with other cities also. Ours is the system in which women are subjected to subjugation, marginalisation and disempowerment systematically, and made to suffer from hunger and poverty in greater numbers and to a greater degree than men. Ours is the system in which for every 26 minutes a woman is molested, for every 34 minutes a rape takes place, for every 42 minutes a sexual harassment occurs, for every 43 minutes a woman is kidnapped, for every 93 minutes a woman is burnt to death over dowry, and majority of cases are unreported. Ours is the system in which most extreme expression of the preference of son is female infanticide and sex-selective abortions took place. Ours is the system in which despite enacting Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 virtual no arrests are made and women are in forefront in breaking this law. It’s a tragedy of our penal system. Ours is the system in which women in politics will become women patriarchs only to raise the Party agendas instead of realising the need of their liberation and empowerment. Ours is the system in which men in politics try to ‘Divide and Rule’ women too in the name of Vote Banks and ‘Social Justice’. Ours is the system in which empowerment of women means only ‘BiBi Brigade’ only, and 50 per cent of the population beg for 33 per cent of reservation in the legislatures and the capitalist coloured Patriarchal set-up performing ‘dramas’ in the name of ‘Consensus’. Ours is the system in which women fail cutting across the party lines to set and discuss the strategy to make the Women Presence in the legislature a meaning and just reality. Ours is the system in which male members or leaders make the mockery of women position in the responsible positions by taking lead and marginalising women. It’s a clear indication that women are non-entity in their respective parties. Ours is the system in which women are not free from patriarchal prejudices, but themselves became women patriarchs! But women in India must realise that the atrocities against women bound to increase in the era of inevitable liberalisation and globalisation as the fruits of the same hasn’t been percolated to them. Talking about women’s’ issues became fashion in the system, but patriarchy is not ready to sacrifice even an inch for women. Women will become scapegoats in this inevitable liberalisation and globalisation if they failed to realise their degraded status in the system. Let the women stop the women patriarchs entering the legislatures, then only the laws for women, by the legislatures will be implemented effectively. The time has come to rule the nation by that ‘sex’ who is known for maintaining ‘human relations’. It’s it is not the case send-off the existing women members from the legislatures. Otherwise, they won’t stop acting like agents of patriarchal set-up behind. Then only women in India will realise their real and correct status in the system. Or, put the Women Reservation Bill in its original form in the parliament. The scheme in the name of ‘Social Justice’ is a conspiracy by capitalist coloured patriarchal set-up to divide women in India in the name of caste. Who will benefit for this kind of scheme? The capacity of women to form a united front will be dismantled forever as the interests of women are same wherever they are, if this conspiracy succeeded. The spirit of women hood will be shattered too forever, if this conspiracy succeeded. The fears about the ‘BiBi Brigades’ will be vanished within two l elections. It’s not going to stay in Indian democracy forever. Hence, women in India must unite and save the democracy by occupying considerable seats in the legislatures as men failed to deliver the goods.
