Indian woman in Rs 2 lakh e-con
If you are a chatroom regular and close to your e-pals, be warned. You could be the victim of a con artist.
Canadian Terence Soundar found out the hard way when his Coimbatore-based female chat friend conned him out of Rs 2.45 lakh.
Poongodi (30) posed as plus two student Archana and sent Soundar a photograph of Tamil actress Asin as her own. Soundar fell for her and thus began a systematic milking of the gullible Sri Lankan Tamil, who works as a supervisor in a Canadian company.
‘Archana’ told him that she was staying with an uncle and that her mother was a doctor in London. She talked Soundar into sending her money to meet her expenses for higher studies. All this money was sent to her ‘friend’ Poongodi.
That’s wasn’t the whole con job. There was more in store for Soundar.
When he was planning to visit India, Archana gave him a list of things she wanted — a video camera, laptop, gold chain and some equipment to start a beauty parlour. Soundar brought all these things to India. But when he asked to meet her, Archana said she couldn’t as her family wasn’t allowing her to go out. Instead, she asked him to leave the gifts with Poongodi.
Soundar realised his folly only when he showed Archana’s photograph to a friend in Chennai, who recognised it as that of the actress. The fraud unveiled, Soundar went to the Coimbatore police.
Using the mobile number given by Soundar, the police zeroed in on Poongodi who admitted to having duped the Canadian national of Rs 1.20 lakh in cash and Rs 1.25 in gifts between July and December 2004.
