The survey results may not be released to the public. Now, Europe wants us to take major part in UN activities, why?? What they are expecting from India inturn ??? Without any litigation could they offer some share in their business???

It's a news item in Deccan Chronicle. I read it. It could be true!

The figures seem to be unbelievable. I do not mean to negate the statement. Especially the first one (skippingof meals)I am unable to get convinced. Others may be OK. Was the survey conducted based on "Calorie & Vitamin"-calculated criterion? How was that 'skipping of meals' defined? Some people (who are not exposed to the modern civilisation) still live a contented life, without being affected by these modern formulae of nourishment. 'How many of them have the stamina to work?' may be a better criterion. Besides, there is some scope for exaggeration while answering this type of 'survey' questions, especially on sensitive topics like hunger. However, the other findings seem to be realistic. This is not to make fun of these findings please.

A non-governmental organisation National Social Watch Coalition (NSWC) survey on India’s poverty revealed startling facts. NSWC examined India’s progress in meeting the United Nations’ millennium development goals (MDG) and the goals set out in the UPA government’s national common minimum programme through a survey it conducted recently. Poverty forces 48 per cent of the people in villages in 13 States to skip meals. 88 percent do not have work all year round and in nearly 45 per cent of the villages, agricultural and wage work is available for less than half a month. In some States like Andhra Pradesh, the number of wage-days is actually falling. The NSWC surveyed poverty and food security, water, education and health among 25,000 people from 1,541 villages in 13 States. The States are Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jhar-khand, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Small and marginal farmers, the single largest occupational group, struggle to overcome food shortages, the shadow report says. They engage in manual labour and non-farm work. Alternatively, they take high-interest loans or sell productive assets. Meanhile, French President Jacques Chirac on Monday described India as ‘a major power’ and said this was the reason Paris was supporting New Delhi's claim for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. ‘India is a major power in the world today,’ Chirac said in his opening remarks at the start of his meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the Elysee Palace in Paris.
