Kiranji, The presence of AFghanistan, China and Japan is a long way to go! But the issue of Afghanistan is different as it is culturall very close to South Asia, but it has a volatile political atmosphere. My that letter may get published in The Hindu tomorrow. Please do notice it.

Is 13th SAARC Summit going to be a landmark for the Future Union? If realized correctly, the answer is ‘yes’. After the Earthquake in Kashmir, the relations between the big too, India and Pakistan, are better than any time in history, leaving the political ‘egos’. The Indian Prime Minister, Mr.Manmohan Singh’s proposal for the creation of a Centre for Excellence – a South Asian University – which would provide world-class facilities to students in the region, would certainly generate the broad understanding and cosmopolitan outlook among the youth of the region. Mr. Singh’s another proposal for the establishment of a regional food bank to which the entire member countries would contribute is a widest of wide apolitical gesture, as it could be used to meet the shortages and losses caused by natural calamities in any SAARC country. Let the SAARC countries realize the need of materializing these proposals. At present, even SAFTA yet to take-off fully! To realize the South Asian Economic by 2020 or South Asian Union, on EU lines, people-to-people contact among the SAARC countries is a first must. Feature films, documentaries showing cultures, folklore and social themes among the SAARC societies, inter-university exchanges, inter-country academic researches and SAARC related researches cutting across the political boundaries must be strengthened. It could generate new employment avenues. Let the SAARC countries declare and finalize a list of all the languages as SAARC languages. Let the SAARC start a SAARC Film Festival. Organizing Summits will yield partial results; there must be a parallel unifying process. Let the people of respective SAARC countries pressurize their governments to move fast more cooperatively. People first, politics next. (Just sent to The Hindu, Deccan Herald, Hindustan Times now to the Letters to the Editor's column. May figure tomorrow). Velavartipati Vachaspati
