Posted by: Mr. HAYAGREEVA MURTY Rachuri At: 18, Aug 2006 4:17:56 PM IST No they have not paid 24 each
They have paid 25 each and total comes 75
Now the break figure for this 75 is
Cashier - 70
Refund - 5
and the break up of refund is 2 to waiter and balance 3 to them
So you have to count the break up and not the assumption of each paying Rs.24
You are telling each paid 24 only after the refund of 5 out of which 2 gone to waiter
75-3+2=70 is the correct amount they paid and not 72 as you said.
Suppose you purchased an article for Rs.100 and gave 100 rupee note,The shop owner gave a discount of 40 rupees. u will get back 40. Then u cannot claim of having paid 100 rupees for the article.
Posted by: Mr. VIRABHADRA SASTRI KALANADHABHATTA At: 17, Aug 2006 11:15:30 PM IST Each contributed 24 rupees.
In all it was 72 rupees .
But this 72 is shared by cashier and waiter as 70 and 2 respectively.
The remaianing 3 shared by the friends each 1 rupee.
There ends the problem.
Here let me see your reasoning.
First you observed that 3 friends had given 72 ( here please note that this 72 include the 2 taken by the waiter).
But you again added the 2 to this 72.
I suppose this is mistake.
Again by your reasoning, let me know one thing 72 is their contribution and 2 is taken by the waiter balance with the friends is 3 then the total will be 72+2+3 that is 77.
So 2 more. This is again a mistake.

Posted by: ★Vinåyåkåm★ chitt♥♥r At: 25, Jan 2006 11:40:14 PM IST when the cashier pays back 5 Rs as discount,

Posted by: UK At: 25, Jan 2006 5:25:10 PM IST Three friends went to a hotel. The bill was 75/-
rupees
Each one contributed 25/- rupees.
The waiter took the bill to the cashier.
The cashier was happy & decided to give them a
discount of 5/- rupees & asked
the waiter to return them 5/- rupees.
Now the waiter was confused. How to distribute 5
rupees among 3 persons?
He kept 2 rupees in his pocket & gave one rupee to
each one of the 3 persons.
So initially each one had contributed 25 rupees. Now
as they are given 1 rupee
back, their contribution reduces to 24 rupees.
They all contributed 24 rupees -- that is 24x3=72 & 2
rupees are in the waiters
pocket.
The total becomes 74. But they had paid 75 rupees.
Where is the remaining 1 rupee???.
Check ur pocket for 1 rupee.
I don't know the answer. If u have solved this please
let me know where
is that one rupee.
