Meet M.N.V.L. Deepak, a final year engineering student of Chaitanya Engineering College who after surviving from the jaws of death is keen on seeing his name etched in the alumni list in any one of the IITs. On April 1 this year, the engineering student met with a close-to-fatal accident near APSRTC complex here. Riding his motorcycle, he was hit from behind by a speeding car and the back wheel of a bus ran over him. His pelvic bones were crushed but luckily there was no damage to his spine and other internal organs. Fixed to a position in a special waterbed and in excruciating pain, Deepak attempted his first final year paper, high voltage DC transmission, from the hospital bed here on Tuesday. ``The determination to succeed and timely motivation from my parents, my sister and friends kept me going. I did not want to waste an academic year,'' says he. On his preparations, he says, "I have always kept myself updated with the subjects and for the last one week I have been revising my lessons despite the trauma I am undergoing and I am confident that I will get through the exams with good marks.'' His father M. Koteswara Rao, an employee of BSNL, said JNTU, Hyderabad, had agreed to conduct the examination in the hospital room for the first time. Since Deepak is unable to stir an inch in the bed, he is assisted by a non-technical scribe and the exam conducted under the watchful eyes of an invigilator. Hot favourite ``I am determined to join an IIT for my M. Tech as this is my father's dream,'' says Deepak. To fulfil that he had attempted GATE in February and secured 137th rank at the all-India level. Though the rank is good enough to get him a seat in any one of the IITs, he is disappointed that he will not be able to join the one at Mumbai, his favourite, as the interview will be conducted soon. ``The doctor says that it will take at least three to four months for me to walk a few paces and by that time most of the interviews at the IITs will be over. I was keen in joining IIT-Mumbai to do my specialisation in embedded systems but the interview is being conducted on May 7. I have now kept my options for Kanpur, Chennai or Kharagpur." ``From the hospital's side we are giving him all the encouragement he needs,'' adds medical superintendent of Seven Hills Hospital M. Dinakar. -----------------------------------------
