General Forum: Current 'Affairs' | Edi kaavaali ?SOftware Career Vs. Core Engineering Career | |
|
Today Indian techies,be them from IITs,RECs or are increasingly opting
for a career in software field, due primarily to handsome pay packets offered
in this field .It is a personal choice and nobody can deny that choice in a
democracy like ours.I know all of you would agree to this.
Fresh techies from IITs,our premier institutions of engg education, either go abroad or join Pvt.sector jobs.
The government is in no position to offer competing pay package to attract
the best minds to governmant service in general and its basic and applied
research laboratieries in particular. Most of Our research establishments are in no way comparable to the fecilities available abroad. Our eastablishament stinks. Our politicians stink. So people either go abroad or prefer to stay in Pvt.sector, preferably in Software field.
Apparently there is nothing wrong with all this.
But in the long run,can our country produce another Homi Babba or C.V.Raman
or another Vikram Sarabhai/J.C.Bose/P.c.Ray? Ofcourse some of them went abroad, studied abroad a,d shined abroad, but basically remained in their core field .
Had there been a software industry boom in their times, we probably would have missed some of their great achievments in their respective fields.
Are not we missing such people now since every genius now a days opts for a career in software ?
This software career offers great pay packets .That is Ok.? But what happens to our national interests in the long run?
We would be forced to hire foreign consultants at the cost of great drain of national wealth.Who would pay for that?Definitely the common man .This problem is already being felt in law since india is lacking qualified technical lawyers to draft MOUS for software consultancy projects!
We can not find fault with software companies or foreign universities for attracting the best brains of India.
But the government must do something to alter this trend and retain engineers in the core engineering field.
what say?!
