| "Indira" -- Is Maneka Gandhi right?
Is Maneka Gandhi right in seeking legal remedy with regard to Katherine Frank’s “Indira”? For that matter, is anyone right in resorting to such an action whenever something is written in the media / books? In my view such a course of action is highly unjustified for the simple reason that it holds out a threat to independent thinkers and writers. Nobody has any right to hurt or attempt to cause hurt to the fundamental rights of the citizens enshrined in the Constitution.
Political leaders being the public figures have absolutely no business to stall any opinion from being expressed, and informed to the public. Maneka’s reported contention that her husband Sanjay Gandhi and his mother Indira Gandhi were “not shown in good light” borders on promoting their “self”. And what an irony? Maneka Gandhi drew sympathy when Indira threw her out. She became what she is today because of her presumed opposition to Indira Gandhi. Ironically enough, those who opposed Sanjay Gandhi tooth and nail during his heydays, are the people who invited Maneka into their fold. And now she talks of “bad light”! It requires no more elaboration. God save India’s democracy.
