This, as I have recently descovered is a very useful but expensive bit of paper. It not only ratifies one's Indian roots but also allows one to purchase/own property including Agricultural land and travel visa free to India for twenty years.I am not so sure that one would save a great deal of money in visa fees unless one travels to India almost every week but there seem to be other useful perks attached to the PIO card.In fact I think this must be the nearest thing one could say to having dual citizenship under the present climate. How ever, unless one has a lot of Personal and Business interest in India,it is really not something one should rush out and buy! It costs nearly£800!!!!!!!!The blerb you get with the application form does say that if one is unsuccessful with one's application one would get most of the fee refunded..less £150 and that in my opinion is by no means cheap!!!!!
Best wishes

Posted by: Ms Uma Adapa-Surti At: 31, Jul 2001 4:29:16 AM IST Thank you so much for this valuable peice of info....it is just as well that I didn't apply for this expensive 5year permit ,inspite of my husband protesting quite vigorously about having to go through the visa formalities every year. The five year visa sounds like a load of hassle to me .I wonder whether the new PIO card will be any better!!!!!!
Posted by: Ms Uma Adapa-Surti At: 16, Jan 2001 3:41:53 AM IST If you are holding a visa that is valid for more than 180 days, you are required to register with commissioner of police, with in 14 days of your arrival in India. You also need permission to leave from same department before your departure from India.
If you have a visa valid for 180 days and stay in India for 180 days, you need no registration and exit permission.
If you take visa valid for 5 years with multiple entries and you go to India to stay for one day, you need registration and exit permission.
You have to go personally, pay fees in a bank (10 times more if you pay on 15th day after you arrive in India), provide them 5 passport photographs and Xerox copies of passport.
How much time it takes to register in a commissioner of police office, which is busy Indian Government office?
That is not the end. You need to get permission to leave. This needs full enquiry about you. They say it takes days for this.
If you took visa valid for 5 years for convenience sake and visiting India for short periods, please remember that you may be stopped from leaving the country.
What is the purpose of this new requirement? Can we do any thing about this?
