Asha has been associated with the Balamitra Badis project for the last couple of years. The Asha project page is at: http://www.ashanet.org/projects/project-view.php?p=841 and the organization's web page is http://www.balamitra.org/balamitra/balamitraen.htm This project delivers primary education to about 600-800 children in tribal areas of Vizag Dt. One of their aims is to deliver the education without compromising on the cultural and other values of the locals, so a curriculum is carefully prepared and "beta" tested before being implemented in the hills. To do this, a residential Model School in Vizag is used where the lesson plans are prepared and evaluated etc.
The model school now has a strength of 53 students, and with the staff the toal strength is about 70. The school uses a second hand Aquaguard filter which is not suitable for high capacities of drinking water and cooking usage, and is not very effective at germicide either. They want to go in for a more efficient and effective system, and after some testing have decided on a reverse osmosis (RO) system.
The vendor is willing to offer a discount, and the discounted price for the system is Rs. 44,000. At present they have commitments from donors, friends etc. to the tune of Rs. 12,000 but need to raise the balance amount, for wich they are seeking individual contributions, big and small.
