General Forum: Life outside India | Uyyalalo Veyadam Gifts? | |
| Hi Mr. Per Knutas,
First of all, I am really glad to know you are attending this ceremony. And we got connected through Internet and this wonderful website...
Uyyalalo Veyadam literally means "putting the baby in the Cradle (Swing)".
As per Telugu tradition (it slightly varies from region to region), we take a small piece of gold, such a gold ring for the baby. If the ring is going to be expensive, you can take a baby dress. If you are very close, you can take clothes to the parents as well. You can buy a Saree for the mom, she will be thrilled!
To give traditional touch and if you have an Indian store close by, you can get a packet of Saffron and Turmeric power, as they are very auspicious. Black betel-nuts and betel leaves are also very auspicious. Give them along with the gift and they will really feel happy. You can get any one of all of these items - no need to worry about whether you can combine one with another.
All the best and convey my regards and wishes to the family on behalf of all the Telugu people!

I am going to a Uyyalalo Veyadam ceremony ( I am Swedish and I am not familiar with the tradition...) and I was wondering if any of you could help me with an appropriate gift suggestion.
Is there a specific greeting?
Thank you all in advance,
P.
