Changing Concept of Family

With the passage of time, the concept of family has undergone a change from that of joint family to the nuclear family. How should a modern man, and a particularly a woman, cope with the changes????? There was a time when marriages used to be the most lasting of social bonds…not always unshakable but mostly unbreakable. Divorce was rare, and where any dispute existed, it was resolved by the elders of the family. But, over the past few decades, the scenario of permanent marriages has undergone a sea change. The educated young woman in India today has a different concept of married life. Marriage for her is no longer a role to perform. Now she wants to play the role of an equal partner. The joint family, from time immemorial, has served as a growth center for its members and society. It safeguards and perpetuates traditional values and thus provides social security. Loyalty, emotional attachments, cooperation, mutual assistance in times of crisis are some of the inherent assets of a joint family unit, and they give depth to human life. The process of erosion of values of the family unit has already started. Geographical mobility today has considerably weakened family sentiments and togetherness. It is no secret that in the Indian families’ sons get a preferential treatment. They are something very special in the family. This creates in them an illusion of being masters .No doubt, girls should take a stand for their rights, but what they should not forget is that men for centuries have been conditioned by their upbringing and society. They cannot change overnight. A person can be changed with concern and understanding but not at the cost of strain in individual relationship. I admit that the stresses and strains of life are on the increase; but these should not lead to fragmentation of the family concept. Every effort should be made to retain the old values while discarding those parts, which are outdated and irrelevant. Most modern girls today marry with definite idea that they will not be treated as unequals and that their individuality will not merge into that of husbands. In many cases, this kind of attitude has resulted in dis hormony and lack of adjustment, and thus the divorces are on the increase. If her concept of family as unit growth center of society has changed, she is not to be blamed. She is torn between two values: 1. Orthodoxy in her family; and 2. Exposures to the western influence through education, mass media, travel, magazines and books. She is confused and does not know what to do. Family advice for her is outmoded. Marital happiness is probably the greatest bliss in life. It can be achieved by taking proper care and through mutual adjustment between the husband and wife. Negative attitude of fault finding by the two leads only to unhappiness. To face life together the family has to have an environment where two humanbeings can live on the basis of genuine feelings and understanding where, in spite of the stresses and strains of life, sentiments and obligations maintain their cohesive character. Let us adhere top the value system to prevent the families from breaking up.
