I read the article titled 'Are Indians really dumb?' on www.telugupeople.com posted by Raghuram Bathula. You can read the original posting by G V Dasarathi, an entreprenuer and one of the founding directors of Cadem at http://www.rediff.com/money/2004/aug/10das.htm. I do not know what context or his intentions in saying that. Its his opinion. For a moment, just that be his opinion. Read once again what Nilekani has said. He did not say that Indians lack creativity, or not innovative, but SITTING IN INDIA you can not do that. Understand this difference. And think once again. In reality, I believe, it is quite true.
I strongly believe that, it is equally if not more important to have the right atmosphere to grow the best of fruits along with having the best of the seeds. Some times, a normal average quality seed can give the best fruit with the right kind of atmosphere. I hope you understand my point.
I am summarizing my thoughts as points. Rate yourself for each of the points,for INDIA and USA, and see for yourself which is better.
1. America definitely provides much better atmosphere to start some thing on your own and propel to success and make it big. Be their policies, open windows, taxation structure, consider all the aspects you are aware of regarding a business.
Forget about starting your own business,just consider the example of getting a driving license in US and in INDIA.
At every instance the system works in US to almost perfection. Everyone know how it works in INDIA. It improved a lot, but still a long long way to go even closer to the US system.
2. 'Individuality' and 'originality' are respected every where, irrespective of your position and status. This is very critical point, as originality is what brings in innovation and creativity.
Many Indians does not express thier true opinions. They talk for others. They talk, thinking for every word, thinking 'what other people say if I say this'. For everything they do, they first think what others think about them? This really kills the original self of the person and the originality.
I have seen so many articles on Telugupeople.com, including the article i mentioned earlier, which are posted by lifting from other sources without even mentioning the source of the posting. Many people COMPILE than CREATE some thing. I saw very interesting argument about this. Some said, it does not matter who originally posted it, it is important to share the message. I appreciate, that the person wanted to share the message with telugu people. It can be simply done by posting the original URL of the message, and write your opinion on the message.
The favourite topic for most Indians is movies. How many movies in tollywood are ORIGINAL?
How many products that you use in your daily life are created/and or invented in INDIA by any body living in INDIA.
3. How many Indian students studied what they studied because they have interest in that particular discipline? Compare with American students. Do you see a difference? I do not have to explain any thing here. Everybody has gone through it and know what it really is.
It is important that this concept is applicable to all aspects of Life in India.
4. People respect for what you are recently than what you did 10 ye ars back. This keeps people on their toes to do something and prove themselves. Every time, and all the time. This is very important,this is what propels to Innovation and creativity, force them to try something different, do something different to keep their edge.
A pop star this year is completely ignored next year if the performance is bad. He gets back his stardom in only one way. By giving his best and proving once again, NOW.
The process of selecting ATHLETES is just an example. The only way you can make it to the team is by performing. PERIOD.
Consider any SELECTION criteria in INDIA. Be it a promotion, election, or selection of even a Supreme court judge. There are SOME OTHER THINGS than just performance. You know what I mean.
5. I truly believe that just being born in a part of the world do not make what he is or what he can become. But where he lives, with whom he lives, is what makes the difference.
The same people who so stylishly throw garbage on to the roads in INDIA, keep their own garbage with them and throw in a trash can around the corner in some other parts of the world.
The same people who never thanked the auto driver,thank and smile at every one they come across.
The same people. But differen behaviour. Do you see my point.
The environment really makes a difference. You may be a genius or an ordinary person. But as long as you have a dream, in MOST cases, the environment in US let you express ur dreams and
adds wings to your dreams, while some places, you don't even speak of your dreams.
Some (you judge how some) Indians are more smarter than disciplined and truthful. When they apply for student visa, they approach a CONSULTANT and show to the Immigration
that they indeed own so many assets and bank balance. When they apply for job, they COMPILE resumes to make it the BEST resume ever made. Just out of College finishing MS, and still
the resume shows 6 years software architecting experience in whatever domain the job description says. It is really some thing original and innovatively smart. They really think a lot and do things, than just being disciplined and truthful.
If an accident happens in India, no body but god know who is right and who is wrong. But when an accident happens in US, one of them gives his/her insurance company number to the other party. Do you see something different here??
I am not saying, Indians or Americans. But people living in US and living in India. It makes a huge difference. And that is my point.US may not be the best place, but definitely 1000 times better than INDIA to start your own business or express your own identity. Some people say people in America are crazy. Yes they are. They are different. They are crazy. In most cases, they are very creative and they create some thing new. It does not stop there, unlike some of the european countries. They make a BUSINESS out of their creation.
Think for a minute. And judge for yourself, given a chance, which one you choose.
