Indian Education System - A School Teacher's version

Before I proceed further into sharing my thoughts, I have a few things to be mentioned and a few questions to ask. I was working as a teacher in a school earlier after completion of my B.Ed. for two years. The amount of pressure put on the teachers is unbearable. But equally bad or even more is the pressure put on the children by the teachers out of frustration. Ultimately the child is affected badly, he/she is a victim of two-both aprents and the teacher. I thought to myself....... How far am I doing justice to the children, who are paying me my salary? Who am I to shout/yell or beat them? They have the right to beat me as I am taking the salary from them and not they. This may sound stupid but it is the fact. I am sorry if this hurts, but its the truth. Teachers fear from the management as they are held responsible if the child does not study well. A teacher is answerable if they are not submitting the books on time. Teachers are told to give HOMEWORK (H.W.) in all subjects (total 6 or 7 subjects). The child goes home at 4 or 5 p.m. He/she is given food/milk and asked to sit and complete the H.W. and have food (dinner) and sleep. Children are not at all given the time to play around. At school, if the teacher does not complete his/her portions, they take the permission of the management or the colleague to spare them with their classes or extra hours to complete the portions. There is a so-called sports/games period at school and how many are really giving them time to play? How many children are really having the time to play? The poor child is curtailed or refrained from all activities except from studies. They are forced to sit and read/write and nothing. the poor child's brain at the age of 3 or 4 is filled with ABC... or 123.... Is it so necessary to infuse such education without the child's interest? Education should be fun and not a compulsion. The children should be made to feel 'Mummy I want to go to school' instead of 'I don't want to go to the school. teacher will beat me, sir will beat me'. Its such a bad remark on the part of teachers/schools. How many parents are educated so they can teach their children at home after school hours? How many parents can spare time for the child's H.W.? Parents send their children to school to learn. Its not just to learn ABC and 123 but its more to do with the character of the child. Every child has the same IQ from age 3 to 10. They have the capacity to grasp more easily than we adults. Its the right time to shape and mould their life than spoiling at the tender age. It should be the education for life and not for the sake of ABCs......... The education pattern has to be the same at all schools. The pattern of teaching should be the same. The portions should be lessened and burdens too. The teacher has to see that the child learns the lesson with heart and mind and not just on the paper for proof to parents and the PRINCIPAL. Education in general terms is 'SCHOOL' for Indians. We are sent to schools from the age of 3 roughly. Parents send us with all enthusiasm with the idea that we grow up and become doctor, engineer, the new-trend-software engineer, lawyer etc etc. The schools are paid HIGHLY in the name of so many term fees, tuition fees and donations. Some times maintainence, etc etc. How far are the teachers doing justice to their jobs? Teaching is not a job and when one understands this, the education system will automatically improve. Its a humble request to the schools/management/teachers and most important to the education department to kindly reduce the tension in the tender minds. Give them time to play, explore and read and understand things rather than mugging up answers for the EXAMINATIONS. The children should be made to understand lessons at school, come home and spare time for play. Relax and a few minutes for studying what was taught in the school on the particular day. Its not important for the children to literally write something as H.W. Its just enough if they understand and reproduce the same in the form of ideas, thoughts, writing or sharing thoughts. Let education be fun and educative. Please don't make it a NIGHTMARE!
