Certain english words which appear in Telugu News-Reading, on popular telugu TV Channels, are often mis-pronounced. Generally the word 'block'is pronounced as 'black'; the word 'rocket' is pronounced as 'racket'; 'hostel' as 'haastal' etc etc.
Everytime one hears these words pronounced this way, it becomes somewhat jarring to the ears and the seriousness of the news suffers to some extent and the talent of the news reader becomes a question mark. Well, this is not a matter of splitting hair. Also it doesn't reflect poorly, only on the news reader. It reflects more on the News producer.
A run of the mill or mediocre producer lets these things pass or more likely, he may not be aware of these things himself. A very good producer or news reader will ensure that these lapses do not occur. In order to do that, one must first of all know why and how this is happening.
After all, most of the news readers are supposed to be reasonably intelligent people and definitely none of them is supposed to be a dud. The producer's job is to help the news readers do their job well.
In this particular instance, a perceptive producer will ensure that the script that is given to the news readers contains english words written only in english script, rather than in telugu script. One can easily understand that the words mentioned above which are often mispronounced, cannot be differentiated easily in telugu script.
Ofcourse this is a great limitation of the telugu language script, which is not quite as versatile as many other languages in this respect. If this one simple aspect is kept in mind, most of the errors of the type mentioned above will not occur.
News Producers and News Readers of Telugu TV News Channels may please take note in a sportsman spirit, and improve the quality of their production and effort.
