Sir, This letter refers to the article, ‘United We Stand’, by Mr. Ramachandra Guha, on 3rd May 2003 and Prime Minister’s latest peace initiative to Pakistan. Yes, a truly bold but an optimistic attempt by the Prime Minister. It is true, the PM’s motive is good, but when ever the process starts there is no guarantee that he will not face hue and cry from Sangh Parivar. They may not like the PM to give any kind of concessions to Pakistan. More over, Pakistan cannot be trusted. What it appears and speaks are different from what it does. It was proved several times. When the peace initiatives fail, it definitely does some thing like misadventures. And ultimately, the result could be frightening as the incidents after trips of Lahore and Agra suggests. Pakistan has very well established infrastructure to aid and train the terrorists not only in India, it may be said for Afghanistan or Muslim dominated areas of China. Overnight, it’s just impossible to liquidate that infrastructure for Mr.Musharaff. Even, if Mr. Musharaff wants to do something good for both countries, he may face stiff resistance. It will be difficult for him to take decisions against some elite sections of Pakistan. As the Prime Minister has declared that this peace initiative is going to be the last one during his lifetime, there is a clear-cut message to Pakistan. The future Prime Ministers may not be that much soft towards Pakistan. It is ironic to see that the Congress boycotted the PM’s speech delivered in Srinagar. Mr. Vajpayee went to Srinagar not as a functionary of BJP but as a Prime Minister, as Mr. Ramachandra Guha stated. These kinds of amateur attitudes of political parties may send wrong signals across the borders. Because of internal politics Mughals (In other sense, India) lost Qandahar forever. Regarding, either the peace process or Kashmir Issue or Unity and Integrity of India, every policy must be unanimous, both at national and states’ level. All the sections in India need to realize that maintaining and upholding the unity and integrity of India can be done only when we maintained a unanimous and common strategy as Kashmir is our birthright and we must preserve that right. The industry, intelligentsia and politicians, at all levels need to form a common platform that includes Kashmiris also, to discuss the activities of employment generation in Kashmir. Unemployment is one of the reasons for terrorism in Kashmir. The employed youth may not become terrorists any where in India. Kashmir is no exception. To do this, a common agenda need to be drafted first. That too non-government agencies. It is better to develop apolitical contacts among Indian population. It was proved several times that Kashmiris are with us. The recent indication was they came to vote disregarding threats to their lives. While remaining voters in India watching a cricket match on the poling day in one particular election, the Kashmiris came out to exercise their franchise when there are guns pointing them. This is the clear indication of their commitment and determination. If the apolitical relations nurtures by non-governmental organizations apart from political initiatives, the Pakistan will be with clipped wings. Velavartipati Vachaspati
