Think about this
Indians, it seems, yet to learn the art of democracy.
Sweden doubled the women members in their parliament, and more Scandinavian countries followed. It was done without official laws, acts etc, by just with an understanding among all the political parties of that country.
What a wonderful maturity the citizens of the Sweden have shown to the world!
But our leaders failed to come to consensus within the Parliament, outside the parliament, on the Women Reservation Issue.
The women reservation issue, as raised by Sarojini Naidu in 1920 for the first time, never attracted the politics in India till recently. The status of women in Indian society has just changed from kitchen cloth (‘masigudda’) to kitchen queen (‘vantala rani’). It is not exaggeration; just see facts and statistics of suicides by housewives, dowry harassment issues, eve teasing issues, women literacy, women education and number of women legislators in India. What ever, Indian women achieved is superficial. At core, they as stated above.
Ironically, no political party opposes the Reservations. But after 1990, with the raise of Mandal Commission issues, every party, every ideology, it influenced every sector in politics. Ultimately polarization of voters resulted. Hence, there had been instability at the Centre. Mr. V. P. Singh’s government collapsed due to internal struggles. Janata Dal Splits in to several factions. The hang over of that OBC cause and patriarchal prejudices, it seems still continuing among Indian politics. That’s why these political parities creating troubles raising this OBC issue again. They need to realize no one will be the winner, if this caste politics continue in this Women Reservation Issue.
Why can’t they discuss this issue outside the parliament?
If they have the will, they can do it. But they don’t have that will.
If it continued further, again, no political party could gain anything. Ultimately, the BJP will get benefited as it introduced this bill.
In 1967, 67 women contested among them 31 elected.
In 1977, 70 women contested among them 19 elected.
In 1989, 189 women contested among them 40 elected.
Hence, the rate of contestants increased, but not the rate of elected.
In 11th Lok Sabha Elections, 388 women contested, among them only 103 were political backing. Among elected, all the women were belong to any political party.
Hence, if there is political backing, women will get elected. But political parties are not offering the adequate tickets to women. It is in reverse to Sweden, a matured democracy. There is no wrong thing to compare Indian democracy with that of matured one.
Drinker needs a cause to drink. That’s what exactly happens among political parties, when the issue of autonomy of women comes. They search for the causes to throw this bill into abysses.
I request all the Telugu to think about this. And reciprocate in public by the following methods.
1. Hence, I advocate women raise your protest with the slogan, “No Proper Reservations. No Proper Representation. Hence, No Vote”.
2. Threaten the future elections not to vote, if the women reservation bill hasn’t passed.
3. Write letters to the various newspapers, to the readers’ column to express you discontent. If they will get published, the political parties may notice your discontent.
Hence, women folk please act quickly as the presence of women is going to be one of the causes for emancipation of women in future. Backwardness of women is a curse to any society. Their progress is as important as that of men, as they form the large section of the society. Their development can take India forward. Women’s’ rights are human rights. Women’s’ emancipation is national emancipation. If any society, culture, nation, man marginalizes women, it is not at all good.
Otherwise, the society will lose valuable human resources.
Please show that Telugus are forward in this cause. The reasons are:
1. In 1985, it was Mr.N. T. Rama Rao, not Ms. Indira Gandhi, who gave the equal share to the women in property inheritance, the State, Andhra Pradesh, for the first time in India enacted the law providing the equal share to the women in the inheritance of the property on par with men. Then followed Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.
2. In 1985, Government of Andhra Pradesh, under Mr. N.T.Rama Rao, enacted a law providing the reservations for women in legislature, Jobs and educational institutions, the first of its kind India.
For those who are staunch conservatives on their culture, may react very harshly, as I used several harsh words about the status of women. Before responding disprove your arguments. I can substantiate my arguments on those words.
