When I was a child I asked an elder, 'How am I born??' The answer given is 'because your mother and father are married to each other'. My next question was 'Why did they marry??' The answer came with a smile, 'to give birth to you'. I was very confused and thought about those 2 answers for quite sometime. As I grew up, I came to know that my friends and classmates also know about it as far as I know. And as I gained age, I came to know how children are born, but even now I could not find an answer for the question 'why people marry?'. I asked this to many people but no answer could satisfy me. I am giving some of those answers, if anyone thinks that one knows the right answer please tell me. I was told that people marry, *- To have company in life. I doubted it as many people are having good companions without marraige; there are always friends *- To have the company of opposite gender. That means sex. Then I doubted is marraige only for sex?? Then there are prostitutes for sex, why to marry?? Oh, perhaps marraige might be a license for sex. Even if not, sex is a matter of few minutes, for that why should one make a lifetime bond? *- To get children of your own blood. This seems to be a continuation of previous answer. Does that mean that after sex and preganancy one need not have a family? *-And then to bring up the children. Oh God, this answer made me laugh a lot, people are telling me the consequences of a marriage but not the cause. I always doubted, if a man and woman love eachother so much, why can't they just live together without marriage. Then many answered that the society wont accept it. Then I questioned why not?? Then the answer is, it is a custom and tradition and one should follow it, without questioning. I think this is a foolish answer. There is no rule that one shouldn't question anything. If there was no questioning, the world might still be believing that Earth is flat. We couldn't have invented so many scientific things without questioning. Then I searched Anthropology books regarding the origin of this institution of marraige. I found the answer. In the uncivilized ages of humanlife, humanbeing was polygamous i.e; one used to have sex with many{ofcourse now also polygamous people are almost 6o% among us} and because of that, when a woman gave birth to a child many a times the question of paternity arose. None could say sure that who was the father of the child. Finding true father was possible only when the child grew up with the physical characters resembling his dad. Many conflicts occurred between people because of this. So the system of MARRIAGE was introduced, to keep people monogamous {one should have sex with only one} and by this the children born to that couple were sure of their fathers. This is how the marraige is born. And many improvements to it, like many women marrying one man and viceversa too in some cultures. Even in ancient India, a man could have many wives. But all that was because of more population of women and because of suppressive nature of men towrds women. But times changed a lot. At present times science developed so much that, finding father of a child is easy with DNA tests. Now, then what for people are marrying?? Now, why cant a man and woman just live together without marraige??? Why dont society accept?? Can anyone calrify my doubts?
