My experience with a greek lady in London
- Miss shobha cherukupalli

Soon after I entered this job I was posted to London. I had no relatives or friends there. Unable to find an apartment I had to join a hostel (I stayed there for about a month) where I were to share a room with some more ladies. That was a foreigners hostel. The hostel owners were friendly. As and when I entered the room, I saw a lady sleeping on the bed. I introduced myself to her and went to my bed. My bed was beside the window glass. I could see a graveyard through the window. I gathered all dracula stories that I heard in childhood. I got up to see a lady 6 feet, stout, open hair which frightened me a bit. Has the dracula come from the graveyard? I slowly got introduced to her and came to know she is the same lady I saw last night. She is from greek. I named her, lady dracula. She was wearing clothes that are cotton and looked like Indian. She showed lot of interest in shalwar kameez and saree ,how they are wore and etc...and she likes Indian dresses. I was surprised to see her lit a lamp. A christian litting a lamp? I thought candles were lit. Later she told me even lamps are lit. Every sunday she used to leave for church. Unable to find a timepass I was going for a walk in the evenings which I was generallly doing as a part of exercise in India and coming late to hostel to see that the lady is already slept. Slowly I started talking to her. One day I wanted to talk to her, so I came early to the hostel. She was reading Bible. She was generally doing that. Slowly we got into convesation. I came to know that she is very religious. She told me that when she was 15, she read Bhagawatgeetha and was very impressed. She said she likes Hindus. She showed me all those hindu philosophy books that she was reading. She said she knows satya sai baba and some more gurus. She asked me who was my guru? We discused hindu philosopy and she knew a lot. She knew about those chakras that exist in the body.I said they are 6 and she argues they are seven. And showed me book to prove herself. I read some books, so I could continue conversation with her about philosophy. She came to know I can sing. So she was asking me to sing a slokam. I tuned one myself for my father which I sang before her. And now started music discussion. I sang another keerthana. She picked up the gamakas and sang a similar song. Though bad at singing, I was surprised how she could get those gamakas and the tune. Now she asks me how many times I visit temple in a month? Now-a-days we don't see people visiting temple, very less read bhagawatgeetha, very few read our ethical books. And we don't know our philosophy, our religion. And know what a greek lady in London reads them and thinks so high of us. What Londanites think of us, second rated citizens? There are people who think so high of us and our religion.
