Unable to pay loan, couple commit suicide
Visakhapatnam: A couple committed suicide by jumping into a well at Kasimkota village near Anakapalle in the district late last night. They reportedly took the extreme step as they were unable to pay their debt of around ` one lakh taken from private money lenders. The incident came to light today after some locals found their bodies floating in the well.
According to police, the couple, V Padmaraj (45) and Vardhamani (40) have been staying in Kasimkota along with their son Chandra Mouli and daughter Divya after migrating from West Godavari district a few years back. Padmaraj earns his living by selling sweets and snacks in the village while his wife is a housewife.
A few months back, Padmaraj had taken loan of around `one lakh from moneylenders to invest in his business but failed to make much profit. Police said some of the moneylenders used to frequently visit his house and demand repayment of the loan.
Police have registered a case and sent bodies for post-mortem to Anakapalle general hospital. Police said since they had the information that the couple committed suicide due to harassment by the moneylenders, they would interrogate them during investigation.
