Italian couple's wedding gift to Warangal slum dwellers Warangal: A community water purification project funded by an Italian couple through Warangal based NGO Bala Vikasa was inaugurated on Wednesday at Garibnagar in Warangal municipal limits, attended by more than 1000 people.
Executive Director of Bala Vikasa, Shoury Reddy explained how the Italian couple, Constance and Giovanni, are setting a new trend in celebrating weddings. The initiative of this couple is a true inspiration as they thought their happiness should last further than just on the wedding day.
They realized that donating towards a good cause for the poor would make them happier than spending on lavish celebrations. They organized their contribution towards Italian NGO, School for Children, which works closely with Bala Vikasa.
Thanks to their efforts, a 1000 litres/hour fully automated RO filtration technology water purification plant has been successfully installed, benefiting 500 slum dwellers families directly by enabling them to access safe water 24-7 (through Any Time Water technology) at just Rs.3 for 20 litres. This is the 620th plant that Bala Vikasa has set up across as many villages in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, and marks its pilot project in the slum areas.
Reddy suggested that others could learn from this spirit of generosity and spread the message for elite Indians to follow suit. When the couple announced their charity initiative, friends and family donated more than the regular amount, appreciating the motive behind this noble idea.
They raised about Rs.10 lakhs to support five water plants in India, the third of which is in Gareebnagar. Reddy, accompanied by Project Coordinator Balamohan Reddy, hoped that this story would encourage similar initiatives amongst the local urban population, who can take it upon themselves to give back to society by requesting all their guests to contribute towards a charity project which would provide basic necessities to those desperately in need.
