IIM - Vizag in search of hostel buildings VISAKHAPATNAM: Hunt is on for a hostel building for 60 students of the newly sanctioned IIM-Vizag which will commence operations next year from the Andhra Bank Management Building in Andhra University campus temporarily. The district administration is scouting for a huge building to accommodate 120 students over the next two years near the AU campus.
An eight-member team from IIM-Bangalore led by its director Sushil Vachani visited the AU and inspected the Management Building donated by Andhra Bank to the university. Joint collector J Nivas and AU registrar K Rama Mohan Rao accompanied the team. They have suggested a few modifications which will be carried out by them after the building is handed over to IIM-Vizag.
'We need modifications like replacing flat-floor with tiered-floor in classrooms, complete air conditioning, faculty rooms and other facilities for library, computer labs and canteen etc,' the team members are learnt to have said to the district authorities.
However, the biggest challenge for both the district administration and IIM-Vizag officials is providing accommodation to faculty members and students.
As per the IIM norms, each student is allotted a room on the campus. Since the AU itself has been facing hostel problems, it expressed its inability to house IIM students.
In worst case scenario, the AU officials offered to provide accommodation to female students on the campus keeping in view the security aspects.
AU officials said that the IIM team had inspected nearby vacant buildings but were not satisfied with them. As a temporary measure, the officials are weighing the options of providing accommodation to the faculty members in the nearby apartments.
The IIM team suggested that the district administration search for a new building to accommodate 120 students over the period of next two years.
'The officials concerned have been asked to search for such a building. But the biggest challenge is to have at least one such building adjacent to the AU campus as suggested by the IIM authorities. We have no option but to hire an apartment complex in the nearby area. All options are being explored,' said a district revenue officer.
