TDP faces bleak future in Telangana HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in Telangana is as dead as a dodo, while the fate of the BJP is similar in Seemandhra, after the saffron party backed the T-bill in the Lok Sabha.
'Telugu Desam died long ago in Telangana. With party chief N Chandrababu Naidu finding fault with the the Centre for passing the T-bill, the party now stands buried for good,' said one TDP leader.
According to him, Chandrababu Naidu might not toy with the idea of having an alliance with the BJP in Seemandhra region after what Sushma Swaraj did in Parliament on Tuesday. He might lose credibility if he aligns with BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. 'However, in these days of debased politics, anything can happen any time,' the leader said.
In Telangana, BJP has become an irresistible attraction to TDP MLAs who have become pariahs, of late, because of Chandrababu Naidu's ambivalent stand on the T-issue.
The BJP has become a hot favourite for many of them though there is invitation to TDP leaders from Congress and TRS. As the BJP might emerge as an opposition party in the Telangana Assembly with a TRS-Congress combo in power, joining the BJP would make sense. This apart, the BJP is likely to come to power at the Centre and it would not be a bad idea to be an MLA of a party which is in power at the Centre.
Nagarkurnool MLA Nagam Janrdhan Reddy, who is an associate member of the BJP in the Assembly, is helping TDP MLAs join the saffron party. According to sources, through him, seven Telanganga TDP MLAs are in touch with BJP president Rajnath Singh. They are: Errabelli Dayakara Rao, Revuri Prakash Reddy, Jaipal Yadav, L Ramana, Kothakota Dayakar Reddy, K Sitha Dayakar Reddy and Ramulu.
The BJP has become attractive for two reasons. One, it has backed the T bill in Parliament. And second, Narendra Modi has an appeal among youths.
The Nagarkurnool legislator is acting as the pointman for the TDP MLAs intending to join the BJP since he is known to all of them as he too was a senior leader of the TDP before he parted ways with Chandrababu Naidu.
The Telangana TDP MLAs, of late, have been keeping a low profile. For instance in Karimnagar district there are three MLAs of the TDP, but none of them is seen in public for more than six months now.
When a few TDP workers ventured out to the Telangana Chowk in Karimnagar on Tuesday to celebrate the passage of the T-bill in the Lok Sabha, TRS and Congress workers told them clearly that unless they throw away their party kanduvas and wear either pink or white ones, they will not allow them there. The TDP workers then had to leave, feeling humiliated.
