Centre unlikely to name Kiran's successor Hyderabad: The Congress high command is unlikely to name a successor to N Kiran Kumar Reddy, who resigned as Chief Minister on Wednesday and instead, might go in for President's Rule in the State.
A decision to this effect is expected to be taken by the Union Cabinet scheduled to meet in New Delhi on Thursday. The Centre is waiting for a report from Governor E S L Narasimhan recommending the President's Rule in the State.Kiran, while submitting his resignation, conveyed to the Governor that he would not like to continue as caretaker Chief Minister and requested him to make alternate arrangements as early as possible.
According to sources, the Governor had passed the message to the Centre and is waiting for a decision as to whether it would name any successor to Kiran. He is likely to send his report to the Central government on Thursday, recommending President's rule.
Interestingly, the Governor did not take any decision on accepting Kiran's resignation pending a decision from the Centre on the imposition of President's Rule or naming of successor.
With no information from the Raj Bhavan, the government did not release the order accepting the resignation of Kiran till late on Wednesday evening.
As per the rules, the Governor has to forward the letter of resignation, after accepting it, to the government enabling it to issue order in that regard. Then the resignation comes into force.
However, with no communique from the Raj Bhavan on the resignation, the government is in a quandary and the officials have waited till late in the night to receive it.
Though some Congress leaders from Seemandhra are lobbying for the Chief Minister's post, the leadership is reportedly not keen to name anybody in the current tumultuous situation. As Assembly elections are due in Andhra Pradesh along with the Lok Sabha polls, President's rule is seen as the preferred option.
