Telangana State likely in a week HYDERABAD: The upcoming elections in April-May will, in all likelihood, be held in one more state - Telangana.
Information emanating from Delhi soon after the Rajya Sabha cleared the AP Reorganisation Bill suggests the two states will be legally created within the next few days.
This requires two steps to be completed: a) assent of the President to the Bill approved by Parliament after which the GOI will notify the same (this becomes the notified date). b) The next step is the appointed date (when the separate state actually comes into being).
According to sources, the MHA is expected to keep the appointed date as close as possible to the notified date - sometime next week - but well before the election schedule is announced in the first week of March.
It is on the notified day that the State of Telangana and the State of Andhra Pradesh come into being and, therefore, the Election Commission will announce the poll schedule accordingly.
In the past, the gap between the notified day and the appointed day ranged from a few weeks to a few months but the UPA is keen that the state of Telangana should be created at the earliest.
Even as this process is being gone through, the Centre is likely to place the state under President's Rule for a brief while to begin with. One of the options Delhi seems to be mulling is to install chief ministers in the two states on the appointed day.
