KCR stays put in Delhi to seal deal with Cong HYDERABAD: Now that the division process is over, the Congress and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) have got down to the task of formalising a poll plan. While most of the TRS legislators have returned to Hyderabad, TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao has stayed put in Delhi, busy meeting all those who supported the Telangana State creation.
Over the next few days, he is expected to meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi and discuss how to go about facing the upcoming election. Though KCR had remarked on many occasions in the past that he would merge the TRS with the Congress if T state was created, the thinking in both the parties now seems to be that an alliance is a better option.
KCR is reportedly being advised by his party leaders to advocate alliance as a better bet for both the parties without appearing to be opposing merger. Merger, if at all, could be considered only after the elections.
But, in the event of an alliance, the tricky question would be sharing of seats. The Congress won as many as 12 out of the 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana in 2009 and it is unlikely to give up any of them. This means the TRS will have to make do with four, if Hyderabad, represented by MIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, is not considered.
Of the 119 Asembly seats, the Congress won 50 last time and the TRS only 10. Of the remaining 59 seats, the TRS could take the lion's share while leaving around 10 to the Congress. 'This would be a fair deal for both,' is an argument being advanced. But, all this is easier said than done.
