Groom thrashed for refusing to marry Warangal: In a strange turn of events here on Wednesday, a marriage was stopped just before the bridegroom was supposed to tie the knot.
The incident took place at Popular Gardens in Hanamkonda on and the marriage hall turned into a fighting ground as the relatives of the girl and the boy started beating up the bridegroom for refusing to marry the girl.
According to the police, the marriage was arranged between Donthi Pradeep Reddy of Narsampet, who lives at NGOs Colony in Hanamkonda, and Likhita of Bandharam village of Kondapaka mandal in Medak district.
When the ritual of `Jeelakarra Bellam' was over, the boy went away on the pretext of going to the washroom as he was feeling drowsy. But he did not return and tried to get away from the function hall.
The girls' relatives alerted her parents. When they questioned the boy, he refused to marry her saying he did not like her. The elders from both sides tried to convince him, but in vain.
The irate kin of both the boy and the girl started beating him up. The police intervened and took the boy to Subedari police station where they tried to convince him to marry the girl. The boy later agreed to marry her, but the girl refused to marry him saying she would not live with such a `characterless' person.
Meanwhile, the girls' father, Madhusudan Reddy, said they have given Rs 20 lakh dowry, along with 23 tolas of gold ornaments. He demanded the relatives of the boy to return the amount and the valuables. The matter is yet to be settled. Incidentally, it was the second marriage for both the bride and the groom.
