TJAC to launch stir for Polavaram design change BHADRACHALAM: Alleging that the Centre has decided to merge the seven mandals that are likely to be submerged under the Polavaram project with the residuary state of Andhra Pradesh due to pressure from big industrialists and power mafia, TJAC chairman M Kodandaram has made it clear that an agitation will be launched against the merger by roping in all the political parties after the formation of Telangana state.
Addressing a seminar on the liberation of the submerged villages here, Kodandaram said that the Telangana people would never raise objections over the usage of water from river Sabari by Andhra people.
'But we will not tolerate the construction of the Polavaram project that will displace lakhs of people. 'We demand that the government find an alternative design to ensure that the villages are not submerged under the project,' he said and reminded that several experts had also warned that there would be a threat to Rajahmundry, Kovvur and Kakinada towns in the future, if the project is constructed as per the present design.
Tribal leader Kattam Narasimha Rao said no one is bothered about the extinction of tribals and added, 'If the Polavaram project is constructed, the whole tribal population in the area will be wiped out.' TJAC Khammam district chairman Ramakrishanam Raju and other leaders attended the seminar.
