Congress holds back Assembly list
HYDERABAD: Though the Congress high command has announced 16 candidates for Lok Sabha in Telangana, it kept the list of 110 candidates for Assembly polls on hold at the eleventh hour.
After day-long hectic consultation, party high command had cleared a list of 110 candidates for Assembly in Telangana late on Saturday night only to withhold it.
According to sources, the party high command decided to postpone the releasing list till Sunday as it is unable to decide whether or not to oblige the demand of party heavyweights such as TPCC chief Ponnala Lakshmaiah, working president N Uttam Kumar Reddy, former PCC chief D Srinivas and former minister K Jana Reddy, who are demanding seats for their kin.
Whhile AICC leader Randeep Singh Surjewala was announcing the names of Assembly candidates in Delhi on Saturday night, he got phone calls from party supremo Sonia Gandhi's political secretary Ahmed Patel as well as AICC general secretary Oscar Fernandes asking him to stop.
'We have decided to hold the list for 'technical reasons'. We will release the list on Sunday,' said Surjewala, concluding his press conference abruptly.
Meanwhile, the AICC high command, decided to bet on its sitting members in a majority of Lok Sabha and Assembly segments in Telangana. Except relocation of Medak MP Vijayashanthi from Lok Sabha to Assembly, there are no major surprises in the Congress LS list.
The AICC announced candidates for all 16 LS seats out of 17 in Telangana.
The party allotted the Khammam LS along with nine Assembly seat to the CPI.
Of the 16 candidates, as reported earlier, Union Science and Technology Minister S Jaipal Reddy has been relocated to Mahbubnagar LS seat in his home district, from Chevella LS segment which he represents now. Former minister P Sabitha Indra Reddy's son Karthik Reddy has been nominated from Chevella.
The party banked on MLC and Congress veteran Nandi Yellaiah to contest from Nagarkurnool seat where its MP Manda Jagannadham had joined the TRS.
