News: Headline News | Declare civic poll results after May 7: SC
HYDERABAD: The Supreme Court directed the State Election Commission (SEC) not to count votes or declare results of civic polls before May 7.
A division bench comprising Justice Gyan Sudha Misra and Justice V Gopal Gowda was dealing with a special leave petition challenging an interim order of the AP High Court directing the SEC to declare the results on April 9.
The bench said it was unable to appreciate the stance adopted by the SEC in the case of civic polls and panchayat raj polls. The SEC had sought rescheduling of the results of the latter but wanted to stick to the schedule of the former.
The bench dismissed the contention of the SEC that it would be difficult for it to preserve Electronic Voting Machines for about 45 days. The SEC also submitted that there would be shortage of EVMs for general elections and that the Election Commission had already requested it for supply of a certain number of EVMs for conducting polls in the state.
The bench said it was of the opinion that the pronouncement of results would influence the voters ahead of general elections.
