Telangana to have 20 districts Hyderabad : The Telangana State had become a reality only because of the commitment of AICC president Sonia Gandhi and nobody else had any right to claim credit for the same, Union minister Jairam Ramesh said on Thursday.
Addressing a press conference at Nirmal in Adilabad district, Jairam asserted that it was Sonia who had made the Statehood possible for Telangana.
He reminded that the Congress party had taken a decision in favour of Telangana way back in the year 2000, after more than 40 Congress MLAs had submitted a representation demanding Statehood to the region.
The Union minister said that Telangana Rashtra Samithi, which was claiming victory on the Statehood issue, should remember that it was founded only in 2001.
However, he said that he was not interested in making any adverse comments against TRS president K Chandrasekhara Rao. He said that the number of districts in Telangana would be doubled to 20 for administrative convenience.
Jairam promised that a 4,000 MW power plant would be established in Telangana with 90 per cent Central assistance to tide over the power crisis if the UPA came back to power at the Centre.
He said that they would also take steps to provide national project status to Pranahitha-Chevella and Palamur Drinking Water projects, if voted to power. The Union minister informed that the party manifesto for Telangana would be released on Saturday which would satisfy all the sections.
Parliament member G Vivek said that it was wrong on the part of TRS president K Chandrasekhara Rao to go back on his word on merging his party with Congress after the formation of Telangana.
AICC SC cell chairman Koppula Raju was also present.Earlier, Jairam interacted with party functionaries and expressed anger at the rebel leaders who had filed nominations against the official candidates.
