Rain god shows mercy on Sonia's public meet HYDERABAD: The people of Chevella, who came to attend the poll meeting of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Sunday, were quite lucky on Sunday as the weather was cooler than the normal days and there was a short spell of showers in the area.
In the afternoon when there was rain, organisers feared that the meeting would be a flop as people started leaving the venue and were seen searching for shelter to save themselves from getting wet. But the rain god showed mercy and stopped within minutes.
The crowd started gathering since afternoon and the venue was almost packed by the time Sonia landed at the venue. People, especially women were brought in large numbers from in and around Chevella. There were large number of tribal women wearing their traditional dresses.
Usually, poll meeting in Telangana are marked with folk and Telangana songs but there was no such arrangements. Instead there were boring speeches by the local Congress leaders who were trying to impress upon the crowd to vote for their party.
Most of the people assembled were either busy talking to each other or busy on their mobiles.
Former minister P Sabita Indra Reddy, whose son Kartik Reddy is the party's nominee from the Chevella Lok Sabha constituency, was seen taking care of the arrangements and interacting with the women folk.
As soon as there was announcement that Sonia's chopper will be landing in few minutes the crowd became restless and started raising 'Jai Sonia Gandhi' slogans. People were seen occupying every inch of the ground and even the road near the venue.
The crowd cheered whenever there was mention of Telangana during Sonia's speech. The crowd showed more interest in watching the helicopter than attending the meeting. Many youth were seen trying to get near to the chopper.
When Sonia's helicopter developed technical snag and she decided to reach Medak by road the crowed followed her. She was greeted by the people all along the one kilometer stretch.
The crowd went wild when Sonia started waving hands and greeting them. The security personnel had a tough time controlling the crowd.
