Rahul changes tune; Modi chants growth HINDUPUR/TIRUPATI: AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi, who claimed the whole credit for the formation of new state for his party during electioneering in Telangana, said on Wednesday that state bifurcation became imminent due to the regional parties.
'The Congress was the last to announce its decision. With almost all the parties from Andhra Pradesh submitting letters in favour of Telangana, the Centre had to split the state,' he said.
Addressing an election meeting at Hindupur, Rahul said the Centre accorded special category status to Seemandhra and announced special packages. He said Polavaram project, aimed at irrigating 7.50 lakh acres of land, would provide drinking water to Visakhapatnam.
'With a nearly 1,000-km coastline, Seemandhra has the potential of overseas trade,' he said. Rahul said the capital city would be located in six months.
BJP PM candidate Narendra Modi also launched his poll campaign in Seemandhra on Wednesday, addressing a massive meet in Tirupati. He asked the people whether they want Seemandhra or Scamandhra, in what appears to be a dig at corrupt politicians.
Stating that building a new capital is not difficult, he painted a vision for Seemandhra -- full of opportunities, jobs and development.
'I know the people of Seemandhra fear for their future after losing Hyderabad. I am telling you when Gujarat got divided from Maharashtra, similar apprehensions were there. Now, Gujarat stands for development. The people of Seemandhra also have the same strength in them to develop the state,' Modi said.
