EC serve notices to Lagadapati and Uttam HYDERABAD: Wads of currency notes, found burnt in the bonnet of his car a few days ago, have landed former minister and Congress leader N Uttam Kumar Reddy in a spot of bother.
Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Bhanwar Lal on Sunday directed DGP Prasada Rao to register a case against him.
Reddy's car was found abandoned in Nalgonda district on April 30, the day when Telangana went to polls. Around `2.5 crore was found in its bonnet - with half of the cash burnt. Reddy is seeking re-election from the Huzurnagar Assembly constituency.
After preliminary enquiry, the CEO directed the police to register a case against him as the money was allegedly meant for distribution to voters. 'If the role of Uttam Kumar Reddy is proved, he will face imprisonment up to a maximum of three years,' the CEO said.
Bhanwar Lal also slapped notices on 'Andhra Octopus' and former Congress leader. Lagadapati Rajagopal for making public his exit poll survey at a time when there is a ban on all exit polls. Notices were also sent to TV channels, which had aired Rajagopal's survey results.
'We will also book cases against Lagadapati and managements of the channels,' Bhanwar Lal said and clarified that the ban on such surveys would continue till the last phase of the elections ends in the country.
Meanwhile, poll campaign for elections in Seemandhra will end on Monday evening. Distribution of voter slips will be completed by Monday in 175 Assembly segments in the region.
Rs 1.47 Crore Seized
In another incident on Sunday, cash worth Rs 1.47 crore was seized from a car showroom and two persons were arrested in this connection at Bhimavaram in West Godavari district.
'Rs 1,47,87,500 kept inside a Maruti car in a company showroom at Galaparru in Bhimavaram town was seized and two persons were arrested in this connection,' Bhimavaram town CI R G Jaya Surya said.
The action was part of measures to stop the illegal movement of cash, involving any candidate or political party. A case has been registered in this connection and further probe is on.
