YSRC bid to attack Purandeswari with chilli powder CHITTOOR: Though marred by stray incidents where rival groups clashed with each other, the elections in Chittoor district which have 14 Assembly and three Parliamentary segments passed off peacefully.
A good 80 percent of people exercised their franchise in the elections. Even rains in some parts of the district did not affect the spirits of the people who formed serpentine queues outside the polling booths and waited for their turn to cast vote.
Former Union minister D Purandeswari, who is contesting from Rayalaseema region for the first time, entered into an argument with YSRC activists at Sadum mandal. On getting information that the YSRC activists are resorting to bogus voting, Purandeswari and her followers reached there.
The two groups entered into an argument and Purandeswari forced her way into the polling booth to check the voting slips of those standing in the queue. This led to a tense situation and the YSRC activists allegedly tried to attack Purandeswari and her followers with chilli powder.
At one stage, Purandeswari reportedly lost her cool and she too challenged the YSRC activists to do whatever they can. Police intervened and brought the situation under control.
Meanwhile, the voting percentage was impressive this year compared to last year. In Pachigunta of Nagari constituency, YSRC and TDP activists came to clashes leading to mild tension but the quick intervention of police brought the situation under control.
In Karvetinagaram of GD Nellore, voters staged a dharna alleging that they lost their votes as they were not issued slips.
