New vehicle numbers for T await center's nod HYDERABAD: The state government has sent a letter to the Union ministry of road transport requesting it to allot a new registration code for Telangana state and the latter is expected to furnish the same to the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), by the end of this month, according to senior officials of transport department.
However, it was up to the state government to decide whether or not to change the registration series of old vehicles, the officials added. However, they said that the chances were high for changes in the district codes.
'We studied how the process adopted in the newly-formed states. In some states, where there were less number of vehicles, it was decided to change registration series of old vehicles but even after three years only 60 per cent of the vehicles got new numbers. And in states where the number of vehicles was high, the series was not changed.
In Seemandhra and Telangana, both of which have a large number of vehicles, the decision needs to be taken by the state government as to whether or not to change the registration series of all vehicles,' said another senior official of the department.
Around 70 lakh vehicles, comprising four, three and two-wheelers, ply in Telangana with about 80 percent of them being two- wheelers. Over 30 lakh vehicles alone belong to Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts, said officials of the department.
'We requested TG as the new code but anything about it can be said only after we receive instructions from the authorities concerned at the Centre,' said the official.
The official said that the process of High Security Registration Plates would be an ongoing process and whether those number plates had also to be changed could be said only after receiving the Union ministry's instructions.
