Congress fares better than TRS in Telangana HYDERABAD: The civic poll results gave hope to the Congress in Telangana. It won 23 of the 53 municipalities that went to polls. The TRS managed to pocket 11, TDP-BJP 5, MIM 2 and BSP 1. Eleven municipalities threw up a hung verdict.
TRS won the Karimnagar corporation while none ended up with a majority in Ramagundam and Nizamabad corporations. The elections were held at a time when there was uncertainty over the Congress-TRS alliance or merger talks.
The confusion seems to have reflected in the polls ' there was no clear winner in 11 municipalities. Celebrations erupted at the Gandhi Bhavan as the results trickled in.
Exuding confidence that Assembly election results will be similar, TPCC chief Ponnala Lakshmaiah said, 'The TRS, which boasted of sweeping the civic polls, ended up as a poor third. The results show people of Telangana trust Congress. We can form the government on our own in the new State.'
TRS leader Etela Rajender dismissed his claims, asserting that civic poll results cannot be a barometer for the Assembly elections. He predicted his party will surely put up a good show in the MPTC/ZPTC polls, the results of which will be announced Tuesday.
