Leaders prepare for new roles HYDERABAD: As the 'Day of Judgement' is just a day away, leaders of major political parties have begun adapting themselves to the possible 'new roles' that they are expecting for themselves after the announcement of the results of general polls on May 16.
Telangana Congress chief Ponnala Lakshmaiah and TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao, whose parties are 'hot favourites' in the race to form the first government in Telangana State, on Wednesday, competed with each other to position themselves for the 'top post' in the new State.
While addressing mediapersons at Gandhi Bhavan here, Ponnala spoke as if he has already become the chief minister. Stating that the Congress government would usher in legal reforms in Telangana state, Ponnala said a retired judge of the Supreme Court would be appointed to fine-tune about 3,000 Acts that were made in the united Andhra Pradesh to suit the needs of Telangana.
Not to be falling behind, former minister DK Aruna too, a little later, predicted that the first government of the T-State would be formed by the Congress.
It may be mentioned that ever since AICC vice- president Rahul Gandhi had said he wants to see a woman to become the first CM of T-State, Aruna has been openly nurturing the ambition to occupy the top post.
TRS chief Rao made an appeal to the citizens of Hyderabad to exercise restraint and remain calm in the wake of communal tensions witnessed on Wednesday.
Stressing upon the need to protect the brand image of Hyderabad, the TRS supremo called upon the people of Hyderabad to maintain communal harmony, which is the backbone of the city.
A few hours later, BJP senior leader M Venkaiah Naidu plunged into action and made promises on behalf of his party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi to Seemandhra and Telangana, saying, 'The BJP-led NDA is all set to form the next government at the Centre. It will keep all its promises made to the two new States.'
Probably, taking cue from their BJP friends in Delhi, who are busy determining the priorities of their soon-to-be formed government, some of the Seemandhra TDP leaders too began holding brainstorming sessions to identify the main concerns of the new government in the residuary Andhra Pradesh.
'No doubt, we are forming the new government in AP. Our party leadership has begun setting priorities,' said TDP leader TD Janardhana Rao.
If all the above leaders spoke in a buoyant and optimistic mood, the case of CPI state secretary K Narayana is totally different.
The Communist leader, contrary to his usual aggressive spirit, on Wednesday, wore a grim look and spoke in a philosophical manner as if he is preparing for the poll debacle that awaits him in the general polls.
'In any election or competition, only one person can win. It is not possible for all the contestants to be the winners. I thank all those leaders and workers, not only from our party but also belonging to other parties, who had striven hard to make me win the polls,' he signed off.
