People welcome Telangana-state with song and dance HYDERABAD: It was festive mood on Sunday midnight in the city, marking the birth of the newest state of India--Telangana. Born out of long struggle, the 29th state was finally a reality at the stroke of midnight when colourful fireworks lit up the city skies.
Illuminated streets, traffic junctions, underneath of flyovers etc added to the celebrations. With the streets already having been decorated with pink flags, larger than life size cut-outs and posters of TRS leaders, all roads led to Hussainsagar on Sunday night.
The stage was set for the final show at Necklace Road with special cultural programmes including songs and dances hailing Telangana culture.
Earlier, in the evening itself, people had started pouring into the venue meant for the fete. The venue reverberated with 'Jai Telangana' chants and people danced to the tune of drum beats on the streets.
Roads around the historic lake, namely NTR Marg, Necklace Road and Tank Bund Road offered ground to several hundreds to express their happiness.
Traffic went for a toss as the revelry intensified. 'We have finally achieved statehood. It is nothing less than an Independence Day or a New Year for us. Today, we can proudly say we belong to Telangana state,' said Satish Goud from Musheerabad, who was seen sitting on his two-wheeler stuck in traffic near the People's plaza.
Adding further, his wife Nirmala said, 'We are part of this historic moment tonight. Finally, an age old struggle bears fruit and Telangana comes into existence.
Hope we don't end their struggles here.' The celebrations were quite identical at other important venues like Gun Park memorial, Osmania Arts College etc. Several vehicles too, painted in pink, plied across the city playing loud music glorifying Telangana struggle.
