Aadaab Telangana - A new history for T HYDERABAD: Monday is a historic day for Telangana and Andhra-Rayalaseema. Andhra Pradesh morphed into two States ' Telangana and residuary Andhra Pradesh.
As the clock struck 12, people came out onto the streets to celebrate and fireworks lit up the skies at the Tank Bund, People's Plaza and several other places. A festive spirit gripped the twin cities and the festivities continued till the wee hours.
After leading the separate Telangana agitation for well over a decade, Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) chief K Chandrasekhar Rao assumed office as the first chief minister of Telangana, the 29th state of the Indian Union, at 8. 15 a.m.
The swearing-in ceremony will took place at the Raj Bhavan. The TRS chief, a staunch believer in astrology and numerology, is learnt to have fixed the time to suit his lucky number ' six.
President's rule, which had been in place in united Andhra Pradesh, was revoked in Telangana to facilitate the swearing-in of the new government under KCR, whose TRS has secured a majority in the recent Assembly polls by winning 63 of the 119 seats.
KCR is reportedly considering former minister Pocharam Srinivas Reddy, the senior-most among TRS legislators, for the Speaker's position.
Interestingly, two former Congress leaders and BSP MLAs in Adilabad district, A Indirakaran Reddy (Nirmal) and Koneru Konappa (Sirpur), on Sunday joined the TRS in the presence of KCR.
He is likely to hold his first Cabinet meeting around 3 p.m. where the logo of the new State would be approved. The council of ministers are likely to discuss poll promises of KCR such as compensation to martyrs' families, farm loan waiver, upgrading tribal hamlets as gram panchayats and pensions to the needy.
The new government is expected to announce lifting of police cases against Telangana supporters during the separate statehood agitation and announce benefits to the families of those who died at the height of the T stir.
